Why meditation feels impossible

For anyone whose meditation is easy one day and impossible the next.

What Scott says

Why is it that some days meditation is easy and other days it's impossible? Often, if we have an expectation for meditation to go well or we are comparing consciously or unconsciously what's happening in the moment to what has happened in the past or what we think should happen, that will rapidly derail our experience of meditation. Because to compare ourselves now to another time means we have to split ourselves into two and we have to leave the present moment. And then we have to go back and forth between the fantasy or the story and the present moment.

And that moving back and forth is going to feel like our mind is unsettled. It will cause a sense of anxiety in the body and a certain level of rapid thinking. So instead of trying to get somewhere when we meditate, see if we can return or leave the contractions that we're in. Try not to get somewhere.

Try to relax where we already are. Try to change your relationship with the present moment just a tiny bit. Two percent, three percent. If you can loosen your grasp on control, on the object of your perception, on your awareness, three percent.

And then in the next breath, three more percent. And then the next breath, three more percent. And then all of a sudden you've begun to gain momentum moving towards a sense of openness, peacefulness, and stillness and relaxation, then meditation is successful.
